Cradle Cap

I think my 2 1/2 year old has cradle cap, but everything I have read on it says it should clear up by the time they are one. The problem is that his scaly scalp did not appear until after he was one. Has anyone else had this problem? If so what did you do about it?

My son still gets it and he is five. We have found that keeping his hair short works best because you can treat it easier. But for an infant and up, we use baby oil on wet hair/scalp. Massage in a circular motion with fingers or a washcloth. You can also use a gentle baby brush after to slough off the scales. If it's really bad, do every day or every other day until gone. Then I'd go to once or twice a week to keep it away.

Yep, I think the more hair they have, the harder it is to get rid of. The only thing I ever found that helped was a mixture of petroleum-based ointments the Chemist would mix up, under the name of "dermeze", I certainly wouldn't bother with the commercial brands.
Do get it checked, as scoriasis, exzema and a few other nasties can present in the same way.
I also found that this later-aged return of the condtion was usually linked with shampoo or conditioner not having been washed out properly, and insufficient brushing to push the natural oils through the hair.
It could be worth consulting a trusted hair-dresser?

I would check with your childs doctor to see if it is excema, otherwise they make a babyoil gel that you can rub on the scalp; it isnt as messy as the oil.

ask the doctor. cradle cap is residue from being in the womb. it's probably something else. in the meantime get some Eucerin, it's pretty neutral, to give him some relief. just grab a small travel size at the drugstore.

Thanks. I read that about the baby oil. I just don't know how well it will work since he is 2 now and has a ton of hair. I will have to try it. Thanks for the help.

I haven't but at the hospital when my little girl was born the nurse told us to prevent cradle cap if they have hair to brush their hair with the shampoo in it. My little girl was born with a lot of hair and never once has she had cradle cap. My mil says to put baby oil in their hair and leave it in for half an hour b4 washing their hair I tried this once but it was too messy for me. Good Luck
