My son is 3 years 6 months old. He is my only son. I have quit my job to take care of him and keep him always happy . For past 1 year, we are trying to teach him brushing habit. He just hates it. He runs away from bathroom if I take brush in my hand. Sometimes he does it if I tell some story and speak to him softly, sometimes when nothing helps and I lose patience, I just beat him on his back and make him do it. Everyday morning is like hell for me. He understands many things, but not this. Sometimes I do emotional black mail saying I wont talk to him till he brushes his teeth. He also wont talk to me and keep playing till he is out of energy without breakfast. At last he comes to me and says he will brush his teeth. I cant do this everyday. I am really helpless on this. At what age he will understand brushing is important ? Please share your experiences

I'm with Amy. You're turning brushing his teeth into a negative experience. You'll get much better results if it's fun :)
My kids are 4 (boy) and 2 (girl) and they LOVE brushing their own teeth. So I use it as a reward. If they've been good when getting ready for bed, I let them brush their own teeth first, then I brush quickly to make sure they get everything and, if they're good while I brush, I let them brush again when I'm done.

I've also used it as a random reward during the day.

As Amy suggested, sing a song (great for teaching how long to brush, as well as making it fun), tell a story, use a reward chart. Just make it fun for him instead of scary.

First if all stop beating him for not brushing his teeth, and stop giving him the silent treatment. Instead of making brushing the teeth negative try positive reinforcement. Stickers or a rewards chart. If you haven't taken him to the dentist you should, at almost 4 years old he should understand the consequences of not brushing. I also make brushing fun for my 7 and 3 year old I usually sing a song like the alphabet completely off key while I brush their teeth, they absolutely love it!
