It depends on how well your child can talk and listen.
Spanking isn't effective in the long term, you need to teach them the right way instead of just hitting them when they do something wrong.
I found that taking away something that they love is very effective. It can be taken away for hours or days and they have to tell you why it was taken and why what they did was wrong.
You need to find your child's currency and it will change as they grow up. As a toddler it could be a favourite toy and as they grow older it could be a ban on all technology.
I now have 2 teenagers who know the rules, accept when I say no and are very respectful and polite young men. My 16yo still gives me a hug and tells me he loves in public!!! I think that's pretty cool.
