We have a family physician that we've had since our daughter was born. She gets all her shots done at the health unit and so the doctor doesn't see her very often. Her being my first and only so far I want to know am I suppossed to be bringing her in for regular check-ups. She's 20 months old and the doctor has only looked her over once when she was a week old. Do babies/toodlers need regular over all check-ups?

Hi, I do think that a child should have check-ups. Just to make sure that he/she is healthy.

It is a good idea to do regular check ups with your doc. They do more then just give shots....they will check to make sure she is growing and gaining at a good rate. They will also check to make sure she is developing at a good rate. If there are signs of delay of any kind there are many programs out there the doc can referr you to to help work with infants and toddlers so hopefully there is no to little delay once they reach school age. The doctor will also be a good resource for information on what milestones she should be accomplishing between now and the next check up.

Our little ones see a doctor regularly - two weeks, one month, two months, four months, six months, nine months, one year, two year, and so on. Our doctor doesn't check iron levels, because there aren't any indicators that anything is wrong with them. The big thing is make sure the baby is meeting all the milestones and make sure they're progressing in weight and height.

They check her weight and height and ask if there are any concerns about milestones being reached, but she's never had her iron levels checked or anything. I figured the doctor would have told me to scedule her appointments. Thanks.

Absolutely! Are you seeing a nurse practitioner during your daughters shots? Are they checking weight , height , asking you about her walking and general baby milestones.? Do they check her iron levels, all these and more are needed for healthy baby check-ups Get a book on general baby care it should cover the schedule for her shots her check-ups etc. Be your daughters best advocate when in doubt do exactly what you have done seek answers!
