Does Your toddler tense up and shake?

My son is 19 months old. He has recently started to tense up his whole body and shake. He does this with such intensity that he crosses his eyes and clenches his fists. It scares me. Why would he being doing this and how can I prevent him from doing it?

My son does this, and clenches his teeth and has to grab someone, I did it as a kid, and so did my mum. For us, it happens when very very very happy and/or excited. It's almost like all the enthusiasm can't be contained in his little body. That's how it is for us anyway.

You need to find out why he is doing this. It might be behavioral but it could also be a physical problem out of his control.

My son used to do it but it was because he would get incredibly angry but did not yet have the words to express it. He still has (and always will have) an anger problem and has been diagnosed with several disorders including ODD (Oppositional-Defiant Disorder).

However, it could also be involuntary and due to some form of seizure. I think you need to start a journal so you can try to see what sets it off, and then go to the doctor with that information. The doctor can then decide what tests or referrals to make.

My daughter used to do this about the same age as your son maybe even a little younger. It was always when she was in her highchair too. Not sure if she was excited to eat or what. It can be kind of disturbing the first few times we saw her. Then it seemed like she would do it for attention or if she was really excited!. She stopped doing it as she got older and we would try to ignore it when she did do it.

OMG BOTH by kids did this and STILL do (they are 3 and 4). Typically when they get mad at me or a toy. I just tell them to stop. It's hard for kids to express themselves and this is a way of doing so non verbally.
