If he's underweight, I would talk to your doctor and see if he/she has any suggestions. My son has always been on the small side and his doctor recommended giving him a bottle of pediasure every day. It has a lot of vitamins and minerals plus calories and protein - it's basically like drinking a meal. They taste great, my son loves them, and I always feel better knowing he got some nutrition even if he didn't eat great that day.
If there isn't a weight issue, I would just keep on offering healthy foods at each meal and let him pick what to eat when he's hungry. Kids this age are notoriously picky eaters but most will eat enough throughout the day or even throughout the week to get a healthy diet. Try not to spend time begging him to eat or forcing him to take a few more bites before getting down. Just offer healthy foods at every opportunity. Breakfast is also my son's favorite meal so I try to make it really count. I make him scrambled eggs with ham, cheese, and veggies with fruit for dessert so I know he's getting a lot of protein and other healthy stuff that he will happily eat. Greek yogurt is a great option as it has more protein than normal yogurt. Maybe try avocado, hummus, cottage cheese, etc. Eating is one of the few things your child can control at this age and they will take full advantage. Good luck! Like most other phases, this too shall pass!

When my son would get into ruts (and still does) where he wants to eat the same things, I do 'adventure lunches' where I use a muffin tin and he has to pick out a different food for each spot. It makes the meal exciting and he doesn't notice he is choosing more than just his usual one or two 'must have' choices. Good luck!

my son does the same exact thing. I have no clue what to do and the doc says he's under weight.
