My 19 month old loves to get his hands on any kind of lotion, hand sanitizer, diaper ointment etc..and he eats it. I am always taking things like this away from him. I don't know if it's the consistency or what he likes but is this normal? Are there any other moms who have kids who do this? I'm not really worried I'm just wondering if other kids do it too.

Hi. I am a mother of a three and two year old and they try to eat everything they can touch. They have actually gone in the bathroom and tried to eat a bar of soap. Trust us your not alone. When a kid gets in their mind of what they want they don't give up until they do it. Just wait until they are doing art projects and you get a note saying that your kid has eaten a whole bottle of paste, which i think is funny cause what kid don't. so don't worry i believe it is normal no matter what you try.

Hi,  My son has tasted alot more than he should of as well, pretty much anything that is in his reach. He out grew that thankfully! He would try everything from lotion to markers, to crayons etc. He is almost 3 and doesn't eat what he shouldn't anymore. in the meantime the only thing you can really do is keep those things out of reach.

he doesn't go out of his way to get it, but when i lotion him he will lick it. he also eats sand by the handful if you don't watch him carefully. just try and keep those things out of reach and when he does have access keep an eye on him

lol! I thought my girl was the only one to  eat things like that. My oldest always used to get into our deoderant and eat it. We just had to keep things out of her reach and eventually she stopped trying to eat everything.

LOL! My daughter loves to do this! I let her play with her lotion (I usually put a little in her hands and show her how to rub it in and watch it disappear), but the minute she starts putting it in her mouth, we say uck, uck and take it away. She usually throws a little fit, but then we go find something else to do!

Kids are so funny, aren't they? My son also love to play with lotion and soap. I think they are just so curious and it's their way to discover their little world. I don't have any advice on how to stop the behavior, but I do know of a great product line that is safe and non-toxic, so if he does eat it, you won't have to worry about him getting hurt. I would love to tell you more about it! Contact me, and I'll give you the low down.

My daughter pretty much puts EVERYTHING in her mouth. But then when it comes to eating, she's not really very interested. She wants to eat everything that shes' not supposed to. I actually am now shopping at a store that specializes in safer products (cleaners, laundry products, bath soaps, shampoos, etc) because I was afraid it was going to hurt her eventually. I'm not sure why they do it because my other daughter doesn't and never has! Very strange!

My three year old eats play-doh. Kids are weird, I don't know why they do it. Every day I find myself asking, "Now why would you do that?" I rarely come up with an answer.

I don't remember her ever eating those things, but she loved (and still loves) squeezing things from tubes or bottles and playing with them. If we turn our backs for a minute she is in the bathroom smearing sunblock all over the floor.

We started letting her play with shaving cream and that seems to help. We just squirt some out on her table and let her smear it. She gets the tactile experience that way instead of from things she's not supposed to have.
