My son is 18mnth and wont stay in a toddler bed and can climb out of his crib. How old was your child when you made the change from crib to toddler bed, and did they stay?

I was lucky that my daughter does stay in bed, even when she was put in her cot it was the morning before she tried to climb out.

As Cleva said if he gets out of bed just put him back, tell him once or twice that its bed time and after that just keep putting him back without saying anything, he will get the message although it might take a few nights

When my children decided they wanted to climb out over the top rail of the cot, I decided it was time for a bed - better than a broken arm or leg. No, at first they didn't want to stay in the bed because it was much easier to get out of than a cot! So little footsteps were heard coming down the hall and they just got turned around every time and put back into bed. It might take a while but little legs get tired and wear out, then they go to sleep.
