Does anyone have any suggestions? She makes every excuse to get back up. If she doesn't nap she is a monster from about 3-9 pm (bedtime).

When my 3 1/2 year old refuses a nap, I let her stay up if she really seems to me like she doesn't DESPERATELY need a nap. I try to do more one-on-one with her that afternoon because she does tend to be a bit more edgy, especially starting around 4pm. However, we put her to bed by 7/7:30. She falls asleep in a about 10 mins. I would suggest bumping up her bedtime to 7, or so, if she skips a nap. That way she is not getting overtired and you don't have to deal with a super crabby girl all night. I think around 4, it's pretty normal to start skipping naps a lot.

Put her in bed and tell her she doesn't have to sleep she can stare at the ceiling or the wall but she has to stay in bed. Tell her you will set an alarm for 30 minutes and if she isn't a sleep tell her she can get back up I just never set the timer myself. You can't make them sleep but you can take away privileges and punish them for getting back out of bed. Also make sure her room is dark with no toys available and monitor if she gets out of bed until she learns the rules. I babysit for my neighbors 4 yr old and she has never been able to get her to take a nap or go to bed at night I have a 3 and 4 yr old myself. First day I watched her I explained that is was nap time and she did not have to nap but she had to stay in bed. She tried once to reach off the bed and I hollered at her and then she was out for 3 hours. I have never had a problem since.

Many 4 year olds don't nap. Try reading to her at the time you would like her to nap to help her relax and to establish a routine. If she doesn't fall asleep, just put her to bed earlier, say 7:30pm.

I should add that it does not screw up her "wake up" time the next morning at all. She always sleeps all night. I find that if she goes to bed too late on days when she has had no nap, she actually sleeps worse and wakes up earlier!
