Help Please- Dealing with a Sleep Scare

Hi, I have an 18 month old daughter who has been a great sleeper to date, we have established a great nap and night time sleep routine and have never had any issues.

However, I am slightly ashamed to say that a few days ago I put her down for her afternoon nap much later than I should have done as we had friends over for lunch and she was too busy playing and missed her usual routine slot. I made sure she was sound asleep and then went out to read in the garden for about 40 mins (thinking she would take a long nap as she would be really tired) and when I came back in she had woken up and was very distraught by the fact that she had obviously woken and called out for me and got no response. I felt so guilty and was really heartbroken for her. I consoled and comforted her as much as I could, but I think this has now really broken her trust and confidence as she will no longer let me put her in her cot without becoming hysterical.

I have had to rock her to sleep or sleep next to her in our own bed to get her to settle for the last few nights/naps (before putting her back in her cot when she is asleep) and don't know if I have now ruined all our previous good work. Would really appreciate any advice on how to win her confidence back and to help her settle peacefully in her cot again.

My son went through a stage where he would cry whenever I left him in his room alone, What I did for awhile is put him for a nap and went into my own room just across the hall, he would start crying and I would talk to him from the other room and let him know I was there if he really needed something and everything was ok. It took some time but eventually I could talk to him from downstairs and then he just stopped throwing such a fuss because he knew that if something was really wrong I was always right there.
