I think 4 is a good time to have friends over, before that it's just for family. I had a real party, with a lion theme and costumes, little friends, etc. for my son's 2nd birthday, and it was too soon. Not that it was a problem, it's just that the kids were too young to really enjoy it. (there were 2 1yos, a 3yo, and my son. And all the parents.) It's his 3rd b-day tomorrow and we're just having a family thing, I think he's still too young.

My personal opinion at the age of two only invite really close family members like grandparents. Keep it small they'll be plenty of time for friends parties as he gets older.
