With my daughter we developed a routine. Bath, bottle, and a book. Then I layed her down awake in her own bed. At first she would cry but as long as her diaper was clean and she was fed she was fine to cry a little bit. Ive read that it's good to lay them down awake so when they wake up they will be able to put themselves back to sleep.

I just used the Pick up /Put down method that I read about in the baby Whisperer for Toddlers. It took three naps to get her used to it but we're nearly at a straight week of full night's sleep now!!
Let her pull herself all the way up and then pick her up and lay her down. Keep doing it and say as little as possible except for 'naptime/sleepytime now'. I did it for about an hour the first time. 40 mins the second time 7 mins the third time. I'm still at the stage where I have to sit near her bed while she dozes off but I'll start to wean that in a few weeks by sitting farther away and then leaving for a second and coming back and increasing the time I leave little by little. Everything in small but extremely consistent steps is the key.
I think the idea is to build up their trust that you will firstly be there and then that if you do go you will always come back.

Best of Luck

TRY TO GET HIM AWS MUCH OF A ROUTINE AS POSSIBLE. THE EARLIER YOU DO THIS THE BETTER OFF YOU WILL BE. A GOOD BATH WITH SOME SLEEP TIME BUBBLE BATH AND A RELAXING MASSAGE WITH THE SLEEP TIME LOTION...WORKS WELL ON MY 2.5 YR OLD
