Although I am a very busy mom, I still try my very best to make use of every moment I get to spend with my 4 year old in teaching her how to read and write. After learning a few words, she starts getting cranky and stop wanting to read or write. What is the best way to stop this behavior?

Work on pre-writing and pre-reading skills that your son does enjoy.

Working with clay strengthens the hand muscles needed for printing, as does drawing, colouring, stringing beads, playing with small blocks like lego, using scissors, etc.

The ability to rhyme words is very strongly linked to success in reading. Play rhyming games and teach your son silly rhyming songs. Also a large vocabulary is important. Read and talk to your son a lot.

Encourage your son to be aware of words in his environment. Ask him to find exit signs and stop signs. When you buy groceries show him where the package says "eggs" and ask him to cross eggs off the grocery list.

Work on fun foundation skills and the reading and writing will come when he is ready.

I've really loved using apps with my little girl (she's 5), and it seems like she really likes them! My favourite is Pinkfong Kids Songs and Stories, they have a ton of stories and songs and games that she can play and they are geared toward learning words stories so I enjoy it when she is using that instead of just watching tv or something.
Hope this helps!

Try using some reading and writing apps for your smart phone or tablet. They keep children entertained and are actually educational. I use Best Kids Songs and Stories with my 5 year old daughter, and we both love watching the stories and singing the songs together!
