I am having difficulty with my three year old and his learning abilities. He is in a class that is mixed with kids that are 3 & 4 and they are now tasked with writing their names. My son knows the letters in his name but is having difficulty focusing on writing and often is not paying attention when instructions are be given to him. My concern is a learning disability I know you're not suppose to compare kids but sometimes you can't help it and the majority of the children in his class are able to do so. Any opinions on what should be done or how I can help?

Is he 3 or 4? Some kids really do need more time than others. There are so many reasons why he may not be writing his name yet. Maybe you could think about other milestones he should be hitting at his age. Is he speaking at the appropriate level? Can he recognize shapes or colors? (My son is 3 and cannot recognize colors other than blue but I'm not worried yet) Depending on where you live, there may be organizations that offer free evaluations. For example...I live in NYC and they offer free speech evaluations and they do home visits.
I found this checklist on the CDC website...maybe it will help....
