My 18 month old won't nap for more than an hour and a half, how can I help?

She's never slept for longer than that even back when she took 2 naps. She's been doing 1 nap for about 3 months now but some days is up in and hour and a half and some days is up earlier and cranky so I need to lie next to her while she sleeps some more.

She does get cranky and doesn't sleep well at nights when she has a bad nap.

What can I do to stretch out to longer naps?

I know lots of parents whose children don't nap much past 18 months, but my 3 year old still naps for 3 hours every day (not sure if he is actually sleeping this whole time or not, but he is in his room and quiet). How much is she sleeping at night? Too little or not enough sleep at night could affect her nap patterns.

Have a routine for nap and bed time. Make them the same time every day.Same things happen before naps. Example, lunch at noon, then play with puzzles until 1 then it's time to lay down. Do not let her be stimulated before sleep. TV is a stimulant. Try to make it as dark and cool as possible as this helps sleep.

If you're already doing that maybe try adding white noise to the room. You can buy a white noise machine or simply run a fan, if it's cold it can face a wall.

If nothing else prepare for the fact she might be giving up naps soon and this means you'll just need to adjust bed times to make up for lack of naps. My doctor seemed surprised that my 2 year old still naps.
