Hi Guys,

I have a 20 month old boy and he's been talking what I call "gibirish" for the past 6 months. His dad talks french to him and I speak English to him...is this the cause?? I was old that kids can learn 2 languages at once and that's why we decided on speaking them to him. He still cannot say simple words in English although he communicates also usieng his hands and pointing what he wants.

Should I be worried??

It's pretty common that kids who grow up in multi-lingual homes take a bit longer to speak. They're just sorting it all out first! And then they have less chance of getting Alzheimer's when they're old. That's what I read, anyway.

I speak English to my son and my husband Swissgerman, he has started to say words in english but other children in his age speak alot more.I asked the docter and he said there is no problem at all, actualy its easier for children to learn two languages in this age. And its normal that children growing up bilingual take awhile to talk. Ps my cousin grew up with German and French,he only started speaking proper sentences at about 3..but now he speaks perfect French and German.

My daughter is 19 months and listens to one language (English), and when she talks it's like she's speaking a completely different language. Its adorable especially since this is baby #3 so we are seasoned but I'm so curious. She knows what she's saying and looks at us like we're crazy for not understanding.
