Your pediatrician should be able to prescribe a Lidocaine gel to rub on.Doesn't taste good but relieves pain.

I agree with Sami, comfort and just good loving during the really painful moments has got to be the best remedy. It never lasts longer than a half hour, in my experience, and yes it's tough for a few nights, but once the actual cutting through the gum is over, so is the pain.
I tend to use a suppository if they have a fever or just can't calm down, and I've also used those homeopathis drops on the gums - but sometimes they won't even let me put my finger in there to apply it! And another (perhaps) comforting thought is that they are beginning to recognize the pain, which helps them to cope with it a little better.

my son is starting to get those, he is 18 months, i've been having to give him tylenol/motrin at night before bed. i alternate so the motrin won't be as hard on his stomach. when he has fits when he can't stop crying because of the pain, what works for my son is to stop talking (for some reason NO ONE around him can talk) and just hold him and comfort and soothe him. after 15-20 minutes he seems to calm down and become himself again. i hope this can help you in some way! during the day i have to sometimes give him a dose of tylenol for his teeth.
