Pear juice helps as well, and some people swear by apples. Steer clear of bananas for a while though, they work opposite.
Since he is constipated for a long time, take a good look at the food he eats.

Prune juice. Try a small amount of the ready stuff diluted to half. Or just soak a few prunes overnight in boiling water and strain it out and give it to him in the morning. Works miracles. I do about 3 prunes in half a cup of water for my 18 month old.

Does he eat a lot of cheese or whole milk? if he does, try to get him to drink more 100% juice or eat more fruits but if you cant get him to do that then do like i did with my child. He use to have very hard poops and all i did was switch him to 2% milk and that helped a lot and doctors also say to eat more fruit which helps with constipation because of the water and fruit sugar in them. I hope this helps.
