My daughter is extremely costipated and obviously in pain. Is there anything I can give her to help her go and how can I avoid this in the future?

Try adding toddler magic tea in your baby's bottle of expressed milk or give straight to him. It is completely safe for him and will regularize his bowel movement.

To lessen the chance of it happening again I would put more dietary fibers in her diet, instead of regular bread try wheat, Juices always seemed to help too... like prune or grape juice :)

My daughter used to be really constipated from birth. It is really horrible. Now I give her fresh natural juices or apple. Things that are high in sugar work like an osmotic laxative. At their age it is not a dehydration issue so giving water wont do anything but make them urinate more. The high sugar and fibre content of apples draws fluid into the gut making the stool soft. Natural juices work the same way. Yesterday I bought my daughter a frappe from a juice shop that had orange, mango and passionfruit and ice blended. With in 1hr she had soiled her nappy. Prune Juice as Jenn suggested also works most of the time. If all else fails then you can buy Coloxyl and Senna drops, glycerine suppositories or enemas over the counter at your local pharmacy :)

Give her some prune juice or give her some baby food prunes. That gets things going for my son when he is having trouble.
