Possible Speech Delay? Need ideas for encouraging speech.

Hi everyone, I have a 26mo old boy who has always been much more into being mobile than sitting down for anything. He started talking very young but lost almost all his words once he became mobile. His pediatrician said this was normal. He had very few words until just after he turned two. Now he has maybe 30-40 but rarely uses them and they are not conversational words (like yes, more, please, etc) they are odd words/phrases (choo choo, tractor, thank you, i see you, cow, car, go, na night, etc). We've started really focusing on letters recently (thinking this will help his speech develop and he'll randomly say them around the house but hardly ever repeats them and doesn't recognize them on a page if you point to them. Just looking for advice on helping him learn to talk and encouraging him to talk vs grunting or throwing a tantrum when he doesn't get his way.

Oh, we've recently really cut back on TV in hopes that would help as well. We were using it with learning dvds only and he'd play with it on in the background but we've been told that may have been hindering him.

I am worried to have the same issue. My boy is 16 mos old and got only 3-4 words. He love to just play and run around and seem not really interested in learning to talk. I also am looking for advice.
