I have a 2 1/2 year old girl, who when around other people says "I need to go potty", but when it is just us dose not let me know when she needs to go. How do I handle this & when I do take her to the potty how long schould I wait before I say "ok youre done"?

Hi Misty!
Well seeing as your little girl is willing to tell others that she has to go, when she has to, there is no reason she is not/cannot tell you. If she is having accidents at home or with you because she isnt telling you, I would suggest some form of consequence for it. Sometimes little ones will act differently with us moms than they do with others and sometimes that is just unhelpful for us. I also think that unless you are standing there the whole time, to hear when she is done, that is also something she will have to learn to communicate to you as well. As a general rule I think little ones her age don't have the mindset to hold it or procrastinate while on the potty, so it shouldn't be more than a few minutes to assume she is done. Although if you give her a few mins and ask her and she isnt done yet, dont hover, she will probably want off the potty asap when shes done and that will help to prompt her to tell you she is done.

Thank you. Mary. I am feeling a little flustered by the fact she wont tell me when she needs to go but is telling our family when she dose.
