Should a 5 year old child still be in a rear facing car seat?

Depending on the carseat and the kid, they can be, and be comfortable. As long as they are within the paramaters for the seat itself rear-facing is ALWAYS safer. the AAP reccomends to keep munchkins rear facing till 2 yo, or until the limits stated for the carseat, whichever is later. Most convertible carseats that rear face will go till 35-40 lb rear facing & pretty tall, as well. My twins are 2 yr, 5 months and perfectly happy rear facing!

my doctor told me at 2 they should be forwarded facing. At 5 depending on their weight they might be able to be in a booster seat.

No. I think even 2 year old can't be any more. Of course it depends on hight/weight of a kid and a seat.

Knowing how tall my kids were when they were 5 yrs old I don't think that is even possible. Their knees would be up by their head.
