My daughter is very shy and doesn't try to copy me if I put her on the spot. But her doctor is concerned that she may not know many words. I got some flash cards but since she won't try repeating the words I say, how can I use the flash cards with her? How can I get her to learn the words?

You may want to have a speech evaluation done. If her speech is delayed speech therapy will help her. The flash cards may not really help. That may not be her problem it might be forming the letters and their sounds. The therapist will teach you how to work with her on that. Call your local school and they will connect you with AEA ( area education agency ). They will do both the evaluation and therapy free. A hearing test would be another good thing to do. She may seem like she hears good, but really has some hearing loss that is attributing to the speech delay.

Get speech evaluation done....my 2 yr old wasn't using many words either. He gets speech therapy once a week plus I put him in daycare. He is coming along nicely and picking up quite a few words from his playmates. Not that my son can't say words his speech teacher said he expects us to know what he wants...lol. She says he highly intelligent.. He knew his abc's by 2, can recognize them out of order, lower case or bigger case. Can count to 20 and recognize each number. Can write letters and some numbers and spell his name. Oh yea he's a smart one. Your little one will be ok, don't worry.

My son was born really early and they said speech was probable going to be one of the biggest areas that he would be delayed in. So while in the NICU one of the nurse practitioners told me to read to him every night and to read out anything I was reading, ex. news papers, recipes and like if my son was a wake now I would be reading this to him. She said it would help him get familiar with language it doesn't matter what it is. Also the nurses there said to be very described with him, like if I was dressing him to say ok we are going to ware this blue shirt, and point and tell him what was on it. I would have to say my son is now 2 and just got his evaluation for early intervention and he is not delayed at all. The evaluaters said that by doing the reading out loud of things probably helped him with not being so shy because he could feel my uncomfortable and feeling silly reading everything to him and I still did it that he was more conformable to go out side of his comforter zone Now he repeats almost everything I say. I have to be careful. So I hope it well help.

Hi Jessica !

Toddler dont learn from flash cards. They need to be introduced to real objects and three dimensional objects first. You can increase her vocabulary by introducing simple objects around the house like fruits, kitchen items and cutlery and familiar things around her home environment.First just start by introducing the names, then ask her to point to objects when you give their names. She first needs to associate the names and the objects
