Stave off Fear, thunderstorms.

My 3 1/2 year old is scared to death of thunderstorms. He's not too keen on loud noises, but last night there was no thunder. There was only lightning, but he screamed and cried until he was hyperventilating. I have never seen him so upset. How do you get rid off that fear?

One of my fondest memories is that of my father rocking me while we watched the thunderstorms through the window. Every time we heard thunder or saw lightning, I had to kiss him on the cheek as fast as I could. It was silly little race we did to make me laugh. To this day, I love thunderstorms because it reminds me of him. I wish I had an easy answer for you. Validate his feelings by letting him know how scary the sounds of the storm can be, but also reassure him that you are there to keep him safe and nothing about the storm can hurt him. Maybe some library books about storms will help.
