I have a 3 1/2 year old who has been throwing these awful fits lately were he screams and cry's if he does not get his way. when he does these fits I always put him in his room alone for some "calm down" time for about 3-4 mins. which use to work until he started saying "shut up" after I put him in there, I've tried just about everything from ignoring it, punishing him and making him have an early bedtime or taking one of his favorite toys for a day, I've tried the " I don't tell you to shut up so don't tell me to shut up, that's not very nice" approach and nothing is working and I have had about enough with that word its driving me crazy.

I have 4 children aged 14! 11, 9, and 1! With all of them I would lock on a room that has toys and a sleeping area? And ignore them while shouting? It's hard but the more I found I reacted to them? The more they did it? Put your head phones on and check in on them every 5 mins? Then 10 then 15 and so on? They will learn that screaming and shouting doesn't get them anywhere
