my son now 2.5 was changed from his cot into his toddler bed (cot with the side off) at about 18 mths but only due to him climbing out in the middle of the night and falling to the floor, we got one of the side rails as he wiggles so much in his sleep he would have fallen out otherwise, but about a month ago we got him a big boy bed and he hasn't looked back but still has the safety rail as he still wiggles, if he is showing signs of wanting in a bigger bed then do it and if you worry get a rail so he cant fall out but can still get out.

You could try having him nap in a bed when you're visiting your brother, or sleep in your bed, and see how it goes. There's no rush. My 2 y.o. (will be 3 in Dec) is on his 3rd night of sleeping in his own bed, and it's going really well because he's ready, so waiting until you're sure your son is ready is worth it. It happened sort of accidentally. We were at my sister's house for 3 nights and he's too big for the playpen so we had to train him to stay on a bed. The first night was horrible, he was up and in everybody's beds all night and not sleeping, but it worked after that and we decided not to waste it when we got home.
