What age did you start putting blankets in cribs?

Blankets in cribs? My toddler is almost 18 months and we're still using a sleepsack for early walkers. Every time I put a blanket in the crib I'm up on and off checking the monitor. What are you doing?

I know it's not recommended but my youngest had a blanket by 2 months, my oldest was probably 8 months.

I provide Safe Sleep training for childcare programs in the state of Indiana. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the First Candle/SIDS Alliance recommend no loose bedding (blankets, comforters, pillows) or anything else in the crib until after 1 year old. After 12 months, you may choose to use a blanket but honestly the sleepsacks work very well because they stay put. Many toddlers are active at night and the blankets fall off. Sleepsacks can't fall off.

If your child is over 1 year old and physically mobile there's no reason you need to check on the child during the night. A child older than 1 year of age (of average development) will move if they are in a low oxygen situation.

Parents that use blankets younger than 1 year of age are lucky if there child stays safe. I sat though MANY infant mortality reviews of parents that wish they hadn't put a blanket in their infants crib. It's too risky. Sleepsacks cost less than $20...worth every penny

All 4 of my kids pretty much started out life with blankets. I know, ::GASP:: bad mom! But our house is freezing at night and I'm paranoid they will freeze to death or something. (I had a kitten when I was little that froze in our house one night, so maybe that's where my paranoia comes from?!) Anyway, when they were real young (like under 6 months) I would wait until they were sleeping to cover them up, and then I would check on them every couple of hours. My youngest is 18 months and I still check on her a couple of times every night :) It's a mama's job to be cautious!

Both my son and daughter have had some form of a blanket since they were about 6 months old or so. Maybe a little sooner. My daughter is 4 now and sleeps with about 3 fleece blankets no matter what every night. My son is 18 months and he is obsessed with a certain fleece blanket and wraps himself in it every night and falls asleep with it. If your really worried, maybe start with a couple days during the week during a nap time lay one in bed with him just to see how he does. Set a timer for every 10 minutes or so to check on him maybe. You won't know until you try. Some kids are great with blankets and love them, others not so much. Just don't know till you experiment.

I would say that if they are capable of moving around such as sitting up, standing, etc it would be pretty safe. I think we started using blankets before 12 months old. Now I probably wouldn't use an extra large like adult size blanket but a decent sized toddler/crib blanket would be fine.
