Hey, I just joined this website, going through the stuff..loads to read. My one year old daughter, puts everything around her into her mouth, she walks. If I leave her to herself she picks up stuff from the floor and eats, even the dirt in the house. Is there a solution to this

lol I hear ya, I think everyone goes through this. Stay consistent with her and keep a good eye, when she does try to do it, stop her tell her what she shouldnt be doing, tell her why (its not food, its nasty to eat from the floor) and remove her from the situation. do this everytime you see her do it. It will get tiring and annoying, but if you keep it up, she will not. It will take more than a few trys but hang in there, because it does work. Its hard to keep the floor spotless, but if you see her drop anything than causes crumbs on the floor, you can go behind her and get her to help you pick them up. I get my son to do this with anything than falls to the floor, plus spills. We've done it for months now and he will now help pick things up from the floor without me even asking. Maybe that can distract her from putting things in her mouth and be more focused on helping you, shell like the positive attention from it, plus shes learning to pick up after herself.

I do agree with Shauna that if you think she is eating everything she sees on the floor and you think it is abnormal it needs to be checked out. There are better ways for her to have a better immune system, eating from the floor is def not one. Maybe cleaning her toys only once in a few weeks seems more of a healthy approach. Even just taking her to a place where children share toys. But yes if she is eating abnormal things and your worried, take her to the dr. If shes just being a toddler and wanting to touch taste everything she sees, its prob not a concern, its just something you have to teach her not to do.

Some of these replies are just crazy. Yes it may help build their immune system, but it also is not very good for them. You need to take her to the doctor and have her checked out because she could have a disease called pica which simply means she does not have enough iron in her body and may not eat enough iron. I took my oldest daughter because she was the same way. And come to find out she had really low iron and it was making her feel hungry so she was eating anything and everything that she could find. So my advice to you is to TAKE HER TO THE DOCTOR and have her IRON tested.

not even being funny .. or a ass but just keep the floor clean because you dont want anything bad to happen to her. She is doing what she should be doing at that age..

It helps build their immune system, sounds weird but that is what my doctor said. My son ate every thing in his path, my niece too. Its nothing to worry about because if you clean your house on a regular basis chance are they are eating their left over breakfast or lunch. Kids have been doing it for year and years. They grow out of it because they realize most of it taste gross.

It is normal and just something they need to outgrow. Babies use ALL there senses when they explore. Keep the floor as clean as you can, say no firmly (dont yell) and take stuff away when you catch her and most of all, dont stress over it cause its really no big deal :)

Clean the floor. :) I know, that is hard to find time to do when you have a 1 year old, but it is what they do. Obviously, also tell her, "No, don't put that in your mouth." when she does it, and keep a close eye on her. She will outgrow it.

I thought at first that you meant she puts her food on the floor and eats it from the floor. I was still going to tell you to clean the floor.
