When should a baby be walking?

My daughter will be a year old on December 10th and she is not walking yet.... I always thought that babies walked before there 1st birthday. She refuses to do it though, She will walk while im holding her hand yet if she knows im not holding on she sits down. She even has gone as far as to take 2 steps and look at me then sit down and laugh at me..... Is she just teasing me? LOL

My son is almost 15mo and hasn't walked independently yet.

It has to do with body type, muscle/coordination development, and -- believe it or not, temperament.

The "normal" range for walking is between 9 months-18months. If she isn't walking by 18 months, you can ask her doctor about it.

But walking BY 1 year -- no, that's simply not true.

How funny, Liz. I didn't read responses before posting and we posted almost the same thing. lol

My daughter (13 years old now) walked at 7months and 3 weeks BUT my boy (15 months now) walked on his birthday of 1 year! They are all different and I guarentee she will be walking before you know it... So watch out and get your home baby proofed even further because it is coming Momma! ;)

My 14 month old is not walking either. She does the same as yours;will walk with hands held or furniture walk across the room but doesn't seem to want to walk on her own. I'm so frustrated as my older boy walked 12 months. I feel like a rookie mom even tho I have been through this before. I do believe what others say about they will walk when they're ready. Hang in there. Once they start, they never stop! Lol

She's a girl, get used to her refusing things from you, lol. Wait til' she's three. But in all seriousness as all the other people have mentioned it's totally normal. My daughter started walking at 13months whereas my brother-in-law was running around at 7 months. (So I'm told) She'll walk when she is ready. And yes, she's probably teasing you, lol.

Hey Nicole dont worry.... My elder daughter stood up in the month 7 and took 3 months just to put the first step... she use to stand up all the time on her own and would run in the walker.... but never took the first step until 10 months old... one day she just put the first step and walked without stumbling.... dont worry.... every baby has got a different pattern... Take care.

I know lots of kids that walked before their first but I know a lot more kids that walk after their first birthday. My son just turned 17 months and he's still not walking on his own. There's nothing wrong with why he won't, he would just rather crawl right now I suppose. Kids will do it on their own, no rush. :)

Nicole, my daughter started walking around 16 months. She kept holding on to things then one day just let go and started walking everywhere. Just keep encouraging her but don't push...she'll get there. :)

My daughter started walking about 3 weeks after her first birthday. Every child is different and when they crawl or walk has nothing to do with their development really. I wouldn't worry.

Don't worry it is normal. My first walked at 9 months my second at a year but my third daughter was one on 10/26 and will only walk holding on to the furniture. The doctor said he won't worry about her unless she is 18 months old and not walking.

They will walk when they are ready. My daughter walked at 9 months and it was so awesome. Just be patient and keep trying to help her.

my daughter didnt walk until 16 months and now she runs at two! dont worry about it too much. enjoy the fact that your baby stayed a baby just a little longer than the rest!

Just as everyone else has said, when your little one is ready she will walk. My daughter was 14-15 mos when she started walking independently. She walked holding on to things (cruised) for a few months prior though. Just keep holding her hands and walking with her and one day she'll be feeling brave and off she'll go!

my daughter started walking at 14 months. All kids a different. She'll walk at her own pace.

To me, 12 months seems early to walk. I know it isn't actually early, but mine both walked around 15 1/2 months. Either way, if she takes a couple steps then sits down (not falls down) and laughs it sounds like a game to me.

Thanks! I feel alot better now! She loves walking while im holding her hands but if my boyfriend and i let go she looks at us and sits down. :-P guess she is going to be stubborn like her mommy

most the babys i no started walking around there 1st bday.. but i do no one that didnt walk till 19 months

Around 12-13 months can be average. 'Normal' range is 9-18 months... though some kids fall outside of this range w/ no issues. If she's not walking by 18 months... THEN start to be concerned. Otherwise... let her be.

I had 3 early walkers (twin girls took first steps at 10.5 months, son took his first step at 9 months), but I wasn't walking til 18 months.

babies are always learning so many new things that walking can be the last they care to conquer. I don't know why the myth of babies are supposed to walk by 1 year old started but some parents get anxiety when it doesn't happen. I had al later walker and my sister insisted I take him to the dr to have his legs/back checked. He had JUST turned 1. I did not take him and 3 months later my marathon runner was on the move. My 2nd was walking a few days after his first and never looked back. Baby 3 who knows.

Babies should walk when they are good and ready. My now 5 year old walked all the way across the livingroom at his first birthday party and then didn't walk again for a few more months. My now 22 month old walked a few weeks before she turned one and I didn't encourage her walking at all. I already knew what happens when they learn to walk.

when they're ready and not a second sooner. My son didn't walk until 18 months, my daughter just started walking on her first birthday. and no she's not teasing you, when she takes two steps and sits down and laughs she's likely very pleased with herself. Make a big deal of it, give her lots of hugs and kisses and claps. she'll get there eventually.

She will walk when she's ready. There's no need to rush her and there's no magical age at when they do.
My 1st was walking at 10 months, my 2nd was closer to 14 months. My 3rd was about 14 months as well.

All babies are different and will reach the important milestones when they want. Enjoy her being a baby because it goes way too fast!!!!
