i do at home childcare for a 19 month old boy, and also have an 11 months old daughter and a 3 year old daughter. My 3 year old hardly ever put things in her mouth as a baby/toddler, and even my 11 month old hardly does it anymore. The 19 month old on the other hand is CONSTANTLY putting toys in his mouth and he always seems to have a runny nose...so his snot gets on our toys. I am constantly saying "not in your mouth" he will either take it out, take it out and throw it at me, or run away with it still in his mouth. He doesnt talk hardly at all, so when i try to explain to him simply, im not sure he gets it. He has a soother still, and i am wondering if any of you think the soother could be the reason for things going in his mouth all the time or the reason why he doesnt talk well? I have also started taking toys away from him, when they go in his mouth. I used to give 3 warnings, then went to 2 and now I take them away right away and say "We do not put toys in our mouth, its yucky". Then he goes crazy wanting the toys back. any opinions or suggestions?

My son (26 mo.) still puts just about everything in his mouth. However he never has a pacifier and talks in compete sentences so I don't think they are related. I have tried to get him to stop putting things in his mouth but I try and pick my battles these days (there are plenty to choose from) LOL :) When he started putting books in his mouth I was obviously very adamant about him not doing this and I would give him a few warnings and then take it away from him. He eventually got it and I never see him put them in his mouth anymore. So I guess if I was more strict about everything I could get him to stop completely but it is not a huge deal to me right now.

NEVER LOL... My son is 28 months old and still puts things in his mouth. Just keep telling them and eventually they will get it.
