My 11 month old son started grinding his teeth the other day and I can't get him to stop... Is this a normal thing to have happen? If not what can I do to encourage him to stop...? Any suggestions?

My son did this when he was around that same age too and it used to drive me NUTS! For one thing, I was worried it would damage his teeth. For another thing, the SOUND was like nails on a chalk board to me! I agree that it may be stress related. Babies have a lot to stress over....everything is new to them. For my son, I'm pretty sure it was a teething thing. When I would hear him doing it, I'd give him something to chew on (teething ring, cold wash cloth, etc) and he would stop.

Did your son eventually stop? We believe it may also be related to a teething issue too since he is currently cutting teeth. I'm just afraid he is going to damage them... and it really does drive me nuts too!!

Teeth grinding is a common outlet for tension. Some people are more sensitive to their surroundings and their experiences. If one does not release the tension while awake, it will be released during their sleep. A great way to reduce the grinding is to create a calm hour before bed time. Reduce all noise and even give him a baby massage to help him relax. If he still does it, massage his jaw while he is doing it. I do this for my daughter and it seems to work.

He did eventually stop. Now that I think about it, he's 3 and it's been probably about 4 or 5 months since I've noticed it. It lasted quite awhile though. Sorry! Just keep redirecting and giving him something to chew on to ease the teething and it'll stop eventually!

I understand grinding the teeth in their sleep but he is awake craweling around, playing and everything, and grinding his teeth at the same time...
