My 18 month old DS used to love variety when it came to what was on his plate...at least up until now. He used to love Quinoa, Cousous, Oatmeal, etc...All of a sudden, he refuses to eat ! Even his favorites like Cheese Pizza and Macaroni and Cheese! It's extremely frustrating, but I hear it's very normal stuff. I let him graze all day so he is at least eating something. Right now he is on a Yogurt jag! Anyone else experiencing this kind of behavior?

An option to try, though he may be a little young yet, is to corral all the snacks into two official snack times, one half-way between breakfast and lunch, the other halfway between lunch and dinner (or after his nap, if he's still taking one). Also, my doc suggested adding a multivitamin to breakfast time....good luck.

my son is back and forth on wanting to eat lately. he hasn't been eating any sort of meat besides chicken nuggets for a bunch of months - and he too has been turning away from the "regulars" like chicken nuggets and mac and cheese. we try not to worry too much because he does eat some veggies (peas, corn...), most fruits, and usually eggs. i think it's just a phase - seems like he can't stop doing what he's doing for long enough to eat. and i know what everyone says - they will eat when they are hungry, i just don't want him to start terrible eating habits and i don't want to be making him separate meals for the rest of his life!

I do think this is something that most kids go through around that age...I agree with Erin to just make sure that you have healthy snacks available for him when he is ready.

Good Luck!!

Quoting Erin Ryan:

My 19 month old son is doing the same thing. I recall my oldest going through a phase like this too. I just make sure I have healthy snacks for him to eat more often throughout the day since getting all the food groups into a meal is near impossible it seems! Hang in there! Hopefully it passes soon for both of us!

well thanks for sharing your story Erin, it's very reassuring to know that other mom's like you are going through the same thing.  I think my 6 year old went through something similar when he was a toddler, but he wasn't so much a picky eater like my youngest is right now.  That being said, I too, make sure to provide whole grain and nutritious snacks all throughout the day especially since I am having challenges cramming all the food groups in one meal a well!  I sure hope this phase passes sooner than later!
