Do you have a little potty chair for him. That is easier at first. Get the kind that eventually set on the big potty. They think they're going to fall into the big potty.

I had one of the little potty's for my lil' one for a couple months, and she liked going in that. Eventually, she was not afraid by chatting about the potty, the scary part of it, etc. She used those seats and a stool after some coercing. Now she uses a stool and I help grab the toilet paper. One step after the next and soon voila.

I had the same problem and still do every once in a while, were my child will not go on the potty willingly. I started letting my child know that the pee and poos go down the toilet to go be with there other friends, and my stuff too, which are now friends of his stuff, and they watch movies or have supper together and have lots of fun. The reason that I did this is because kids can be afraid of the potty because they don't want to have part of them gone and to not have control over where their stuff goes. I found my child is not afraid of the potty but afraid of losing something that was part of him. I hope that this helps.
