My son is 1 yr & 8 months and hardly says anything other than "uh oh". Is this normal?

Quoting Shondra:

try using sign language with him. We did with me son and once he saw the response he recieved from signing he started talking more.

Most libraries have Infant/toddler sign language books in the children's area. I signed with my DD from birth and she would always talk better after she learned signs for different words she was having trouble with. Sometimes she prefers to sign over talk! lol. And don't let people tell you sign language will delay speech!! It actually improves speech and communication and helps decrease tantrums and frustration bc they can tell you the problem and what they want!

My second son is doesn't talk that much either and he doesn't say full sentences I think he thinks he doesn't need to he motions to us what he wants. My first born was a lot diffrent he was talking when he turned one and then he just stopped. I was told he was working on diffrent development things. He started walking and observing more. Then when he turned two to 2 1/2 all of a sudden he was talking full sentences and running around with his cousins. And was eating by himself. It was like wow where did this come from. He was just working on diffrent areas so I guess he didn't want to talk.

DO NOT STRESS about this.  I can't emphasize that enough.  I agree with Shannon though... about having his hearing checked, just to rule that out.

Another thing I will highly recommend and support is Sign Language.  My husband and I (mainly me since it's my passion) agreed to teach our son ASL... not striclty baby sign.  I am a huge fan of Baby Einstein and can say the following DVDs can help immensely and it's easy enough where you and your family can pick it up too... the key with this, like anything, is repetition, repetition, REPETITION!  You'll be amazed how fast they pick it up.  The words will come so don't think signing will put him behind- it won't.

I hope this was helpful.  If you have more questions please feel free to message me on here!

Dont  Worry!!! My son is 19  months old and says just a few things... (ie., oh yeah? over there, apple....) I was wondering for a while too, but they are still little!!!!!!!  They will be fine!!!!!!

Educational shows worked really well for my daughter. Baby Einstein, Elmo, Dora, Blues Clues, and the best so far has been the Preschool Prep Co. Videos. My daughter learned her colors and shapes in 3 days.

My son is 22 months and his speech isn't where it "should be". He says uh oh, car, up, hot, light, doggy and kitty. And that's about it. Everyone learns at their own pace. I agree with the other Moms... don't worry. But call your pediatrician if you want, they may have some ideas or could send Early Intervention out to meet with you.

I have had the same issue my son is just starting to talk now but his was because of ear issues he is now at speeech thearapy and has tubes in his ears ! As long as u know there is no hearing impetament then he will probably just start talking when he is ready :)

the speech thearapist said some kids just won't talk till they are ready and it is more a agrevation for the parents then the kids just keep talking too him or her and it will come eventually ! Good luck though :)

Don't worry. My daughter didn't talk until over 2. Once she started she moved right into phrases before to long. We would read her favorite books to her and play the same songs. He will start when he wants to. My brother didn't start talking until almost 3.

Do not worry from what i know boys do take long to start talking than girls, since they are busy adventuring. Just keep on talking to him one day it will happen.

Every kid learns at a different speed...have you had the dr check his ears...He may not be able to hear everythin....my nephew you went thru this and after he had tubes in his ears he started to say more and it was a great change....other wise he will start talkin before you know it...
