Hi! My daughter is 3 and soon will be 4 in March. She has been sucking her thumb with blanket in hand since she was a baby. I managed to get rid of the blanket when she was 2 but recently we have found shirts or other clothing to hold and suck our thumb with. She only does this when she is tried or upset. Since we are going to be starting Pre K soon I would like to nip it in the bud. Any helpful ideas would be great.

We tried a product called "Thumbuddy To Love" and my daughter loved it...you can get it on their web site thumbuddytolove dot com. she stopped thumb sucking...and did it in a week.

I always tell her you are going to be going to big school next year and big girls dont suck their thumbs. but that does not seem to have an impact on her. I will try the germ thing and see if that works. If not then I may resort to the hot sauce, mustard, or anything that will get her to quit. Thanks

Dear Rebecca,
thumb sucking is not an easy habit to get rid off. You may want to try to bring it up to your dentist and perhaps he/she would be able to refer you to the website or product you can get to help you with this issue. It is not a bad idea to try something more simple like putting garlic or mustard on it or even talking to your toddler about germs and how she could eventually end up getting blisters or sores as a consequence of putting her thumb in her mouth.

I have heard of something that you can buy to stop it but I just have not found it yet. I am not even sure where to begin looking for something to help. I will try Walmart . Thanks

Have you tried putting something that tastes bad on her thumbs? I could have sworn there was a product made for that, i think thats how my aunt got my cousin to stop biting her nails... maybe something like lemon juice would work? My son is only 14 mos, and loves his paci. I have not had to pry that from him yet. I wish you luck though!
