Any suggestions on how I can wean my son off his sippy cup? I would like him to start drinking out of a cup or a straw. Tried the straw thing and he threw a fit wanting me to put it in his sippy cup.

if he wants a straw in his sippy bup then do that.. for the first few days, then put it in a normal cup.. the transistion should be simple (in theory), i never had this problem, i reassured my son it was a big boy thing to do!

When we took our daughter off the bottle, we told her a couple of days before, that we weren't going to have anymore bottles in the house. We reminded her throughout the day before. That night, we took them out of the cupboards. I hid them in a closet in our bedroom because I was nervous about how she would do. The next morning, she asked for a bottle, we reminded her that there were no more bottles. Much to my surprise, she was a little sad, but otherwise fine. Maybe you could tell him that you're not going to have them anymore, and take him to buy a new special cup before you take them away.

There's a training straw cup I found a Babies R Us. It has a valve so the liquid will not come out unless your child is sucking on the straw. There are handles and a slider to close the cup and keep the straw clean while it's in the fridge or diaper bag. It's worth giving a try, especially since your son has mastered the sippy cup.

my little girl is still on a bottle at 1 and half - all i do is fill her bottle up and a cup up at the same time then she can pick for herself which one to drink we are getting there slowly. she now drinks her tea and juice out of a cup most of the day but it think it has helped knowing that the bottle is always there if she needs it or choices to wont it

HI Foncille,

I have two boys (2 and 4) and I have learnt via the four year old that they will let you know when they are ready.

Don't force him - leave it for a couple of months and try then again.  Eventually all kids master these skills.
