Any tips on helping my son to eat on his own?

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or help on my 17month old son feeding himself. He eats fingerfoods by himself, He has no problem with putting his food in his mouth, The only problem is that when we have dinner, he cannot seem to put the spoon in his mouth and feed himself. He tries to but it just ends up everywhere except his mouth.

Does anyone have some tips that I could try? Thank you very much,

Just be patient! Every child is different, some use a spoon from 6 months and some can't till they are 3! Let him use his fingers if he prefers, but give him the choose, by setting the table with a spoon and fork for him. Also, try using a kiddy fork for him instead! Some kids find the fork easier to master before a spoon, because they can "stab" the food, as oppose to scoop it and it makes it easier to make it to their mouths! Let him go at his own pace though. It's very normal for kids to not be able to use a spoon properly at his age.

Its okay for a 17 month old, dont rush him in putting spoon.Little by little, infact my 3 yr old son just started using spoon and we found out that his lefthanded.I tried to show him the right way but we can't.There are alot of smart kids that we don't know what they are doing until we found out.
