my son is 2 yrs old... fully potty trained about 4 months ago. Use the cherio idea for aiming as a game, but try fruit loops (its more colorful)
my biggest advice, is once you start DONT turn back. Ive got 3 boys total and have learned once they show interest, take the diapers away and never, never put a diaper back on! Use the "cool" underwear, let him pick it out.. keep him as much involved as the one "making" decisions about "his" potty training experience.

I have four boys, three of which are older, and I only used the little potty for poop, and put cheerios in the big toilet and turned it into a game of trying to sink them. It can be messy at first, but eventually they sink them and keep the pee in the toilet.

I have four boys and my twins were trained a month before turning 4 and my third was trained a couple of months after turning 3. My fourth isn't quite 2 yet, but he'll train when he is ready. It's true when kids are ready they are ready. Some are super early and some are super late.

I can tell you I read books, took people's advice, etc and nothing worked. What I finally did was not pressure them negatively. I talked to them about it, their father and I took them with us when we went potty, they picked out big boy underwear for when they were ready, and a little bribery never hurts. Fishing for my twins and m&ms for my other one. They all told me one day they wanted to wear big boy underwear and they've been day and night trained with very few accidents.

Here's a link that talks about signs of potty training readiness.

Good luck!

Hi there. I have a 3 year old son who uses the potty a few times a day. Let me tell you most of the time he REFUSES to use it, and once a diaper in on, there he goes.

I keep books, and toys next to the potty for him to stay busy. I think they just don't like sitting in one place for so long....

Everyone keeps telling me that when he is ready he will start using it all the time. He is learning and doesn't like it, so it will take some time for him to get use to it. I start potty training him when he was 2 1/2 years old. And just now, he uses it every now and then during the day. I put underwear on him, and diapers only at night. He is very good about telling me in the morning he needs to go pee. lol..

How old is your son?
