try a humidifier, maybe he just needs a little "whitenoise", and its good for the lungs too, but be sure to clean it with white vinegar or bleach once a week.

We are going through something similar with my son (he'll be 1 on Thursday)-we took him to see a gastroenterologist. He is on zantac and prilosec to determine if it's acid. I started logging his sleep pattern and will bring it to the doc on Friday when we go for his check up. it's very frustrating because something has to be waking him up.

My son (28 mos.) has been experiencing problems off and on with this.  We have been dealing with some food allergies recently so I asked our naturopath for her advice regarding this change in his sleeping pattern.  He only takes one nap a day and I know he is tired - we have no problem with the bedtime routine and he is eager to go to bed when we start the routine.  Something just seems to wake him up!  She recommended two things:  1) that I give him a little protein/calcium before bed (i.e.  a small glass of milk, a piece of cheese, etc.)  2) that we use something for white noise (i.e. a radio making white noise, a vaporizer, a humidifier, etc.)  He's been doing better the last few days...

how many naps does he take in a day and for how long?? try switching up nap times to earlier in the day and not letting him sleep very long, that's what i had to do when my son was experiencing a similar problem.
