My son has been involved in early intervention (they call it First Steps where I live) since age 2 (he's almost 3 now). They did a full evaluation of speech and fine and gross motor skills. He was behind in speech, so they arranged for a hearing test and then we began speech therapy. It's been really helpful for his speech - he's almost caught up to his age level. He loves his speech therapist and will work harder for her than for me sometimes. I also learn a lot by watching the speech therapist work with him, and then I'm better able to encourage him to talk. It does depend on getting a good therapist that matches well with your child. If you start with someone and they don't seem to be a great fit, you can talk to the service coordinator and get someone new. Good luck!
