I have 3 boys and a baby girl now. The youngest are still in nappies and about 2 years, but I will wait with him till after the winter (it is autumn here). The other two were 3 when they were ready. It took me a week to get them all off. Don't feel pushed to do it early. Try it, and when they are not succeeding in doing it within a week leave it for a few months and try again. Unless you like the training thing...

my son was easy once he decided he wanted to do it. we tried to push him into it at about 2 but he just wasnt ready. when he was about 3 1/2 he came up to me one day and said "i want to wear big boy underwear" and has been doing it since then. he still has an occasional accident but nothing too bad.

My son was super easy to "train" but we started teaching about the potty from ~6 months old, just laid back, positive approach - like setting him on it occasionally when we knew he had to go. Also always had "open door" bathroom policy so he could see that it is something we do every day. At age 1 he started resisting it, so then we quit doing it until about 23 months old. At age 2 we put him in undies, although he still wore diapers occasionally at daycare, and started really consistent teaching. We just took him ~every 2 hours, and gently reminded him to go in the potty and not in his undies. We used each accident as a learning experience and ALWAYS stayed positive about it. In about a month he was pretty much daytime potty trained, and after 6 months really accident free day and night. But he is also a very good communicator, and we talk about everything with him, so it came pretty easily, just as a part of life, I thought. Hope that helps :)
