it's not something my daughter (2 y/o) has ever been exposed to, in her life or on tv, but today she saw a dead bird and started crying, and saying 'poor birdy, he died'. how does she know that a) the bird was dead b) that death is sad and c) even know the word 'dead'??????

Children pick up lots of things we parents know nothing about. Cartoons these days are very violent and children are exposed to alsorts. My advice is go to the library and get a book designed for her age group that talks about the subject and let her talk to you about it. I have a two year old too and she knows about death and illness thanks to the redcross adverts that get played on the tv during the day. She gets so upset when she sees them and I am left giving her a cuddle because she can not handle it.
