my son has had a pillow since he was about a month old... He has asthma and i found that having a pillow to lift him up a little helped him sleep better... give him a pillow when you feel he's ready

I started both of my kids at 15-18 months and have never had any issues. I have always stuck with a flatter generic pillow so they cant as easily roll and their mouth be covered.

Whenever you feel hes ready. My daughter is 20 months old & she has been sleeping with a pillow for maybe almost a month now. I decided to put one in because I noticed how well she slept leaning on me if I brought her in my bed in the mornings when I knew she wasn't ready to get up yet. Now she obviously doesn't stay on the pillow all night but she can't smother herself in it either. I gave her a pillow that is large enough that it goes from one side of the crib to the another but is a little firmer so that she doesn't sink into it. Let me know if this helps.
