My son just turned four and he started this...what me and my husband did was place a lamp that has a low watt bulb in his room and before he goes to bed we talk an adventure around the house; this is done so that he knows that there is nothing to be afraid of!

His imagination happened.
Now this will sound silly, but I know a lot of parents who have done this and it worked.
Get a cheap spray bottle, mix water and sparkles together and label it "Monster repellent"
Put the bottle beside your son's bed and tell him that it will keep away anything scary and if he sees anything he can spray it (make sure you get a bottle that does a mist setting). Reinforce that this bottle is not a toy, but for helping him feel better about the dark.
Also consider getting a night light if he is amicable to one. Ikea makes a cool one that they can sleep with that is easy to turn on and off. It comes with a charger so no worry about replacing batteries.

At later times (morning or afternoons) introduce some conversations about what is real and not real and what our imagination is.
Play games listening for different sounds and making up what they could be and then reveal what they actually are (like a branch scraping against a window could be a tiger scratching at the door etc).

Our son just recently decided he needed to sleep with every stuffed animal he owns. I can barely see him in there, but it makes him feel safe and he sleeps through the night again.

Continue to reassure him and lay with him a bit. Snuggles are always good. :)

Good Luck!
