i want some ideas on how to soften my daughters stools as yesterday she had blood in them. i know its because they are so large, its not because shes constipated. she has weetabix for breakfast and always eats fruit and veg. im goining to get some prune juice today to see if that helps.

has anyone got any other ideas on how to make her poops easier to pass through??

With blood down there, I would definately see a doctor just in case. My son had blood in his stool and in turned out that he was sensitive to milk. It made him have a lot of trouble pooping. We cut down his dairy consumption and added more real fruit juice and everything went well after that.

If your daughter is still having bottles of milk or formula then you can add a teaspoon of brown sugar or malt sugar to the bottle. That is what the pediatrician told me to do with my daughter. Kiwi fruit is another great natural laxative and softener, we give it at our Nursing home if people are getting sick of prunes, but you have to give the Kiwi on an empty stomach ie just before breakfast.

my pedi suggests miralax it is a gentle laxative if she has hard stool you can use it as needed. plz make sure you do see a doc though it could be a serious problem. she could be bleeding from some where in her intestine if it is bright red blood it is lower down and if it is darker it is higher up could be hemmroids or it could be a lower gi bleed ect. this is not a matter to blow off it could be very serious. good luck
