In Australia (I'm Australian too.) you can ring your local council and they should give you information on family day care providers in your area.

I paid $75/week for anything up to 32 hours; $115 for anything over 32 hours. This worked well for us b/c my husband's schedule varied at the time, so we would need anywhere between 3 and 5 days per week at 4-8 hrs per day.

As far as questions... the important thing is to make sure that the care taker will respect your role as parent, follow your directions (such as feeding times, types of foods, nap times, discipline, etc.), and that your personalities click. Our first care giver went directly against our wishes and let our son sleep in the swing. We caught her doing it several times. And, among other issues, we ended up feeling like she just didn't want to take the time and care necessary to take proper care of our son. However, our second care giver was awesome. Her morals, child rearing philosophy, and experience were right in line with what we were looking for. She respected our routine for feeding and nap times. And all the other kids she watched were happy and healthy and seemed to genuinely care for her. We were very blessed to have her! If my husband hadn't lost his job last fall and been home during the day to take care of our son, we would still be with her!

Do you have a place around your area that handles information on area day cares? We have something called Childcare Resource and Referral. I know they can give give info on the average rates in the area for home based and center based day cares. If you can find something like that in your area you could probably get any info you're looking for.
