My almost 2 year old son sucks his pointer and middle finger on his right hand. He has been doing this forever it seems. I noticed today that from sucking on them, he has dried out those fingers so much that at the base of his middle finger the skin is starting to crack. I am sure the cooler fall weather isn't helping to keep them moist either. Any suggestions on how to get him to stop sucking on them?

We would try the blanket thing, but he usually only sucks on the fingers when he is tired. But the thing is he has his blanket with him too. He rubs the blankie with one and while holding with the one he is sucking on. It seems to sooth him and helps him sleep better. It is just that his skin dries out so fast that worries us

my son used to do that we tried everything to get him to stop but it never worked...i just washed his hands frequently and used baby lotion to soothe his hand and one day jsut out of the blue it stopped...its a self soothing mechinism....try to give him a stuffed animal or favorite blanket whe he is upset or sleepy or whenever you notice he is doing it more and see if that helps
