When can this change be made? My son is 3 1/2, but he's tall so his carseat straps are too low--below his shoulders. And though he's tall, he's also thin. I guess I need to check my state safety requirements, right? Or with his doctor?

Try the Britax Regent. It is a 5 pt harness carseat for tall children. It fits kids up to 53 inches tall and up to 80 lbs. The seated shoulder strap height goes up to 20 inches. It is a BIG seat and heavy too. It is a bit of a pain but I love the safety and security of the 5pt harness for as long as possible.

It should say on the carseat when your child is too big for his seat.. my son is also 3 1/2 and tall.. I think the requirements at least for ontario is 40 lbs, 40 inches which ever comes first.. I would check with the police they are up to date on these things.. hope that helped some
