When given a sippy cup My 17 month old son just chews them, I've tried the hard tipped ones and the soft tip ones. He really doesnt drink out of them and if he does it is rare. Anyone else get through this?

Thanks so much Angela - My mom told me just to wait cuz he obviously isnt ready and I was getting real upset over him being upset not being able to have his bottle.. I dont want him to force him to seperate from his bottle, he is my first so he is bond to be a tad spoiled, but I just dont think he is ready for the transition, yet. He doesnt seem to understand..

I went through this with my son. We transitioned early to the gerber orthontic soft spouted sippie cups and we just couldn't get him to do anything but play w/the hard tipped ones or silicone straws. It took till after he was about 2 years 3 months to actually realize what they were for. Though we got much scrutiny from the docs, you have to let them try them, over and over again, but we don't believe in forcing it. Seriously, one day he just picked it up and hasn't used a silicone spout since. He even loves the staw ones now! Just take a deep breath, keep introducing them to him and try not giving him juice or his favorite drink except in the sippy cup. Then he'll realize at some point that the good stuff is in there and if he wants it, he'll have to drink out of the sippy cup. :-)

My husband just said to cut a little hole in the nipple of the bottle. We did it with her pacifer. It didn't feel the same a she refused to use it. Hardest week of my life. Giving up the bottle was easier than the pacifer

Corina would not give up thebottles. She would drink water and juice from a sippy cup, but not milk. I had to throw it away. Try to get cups that tops look kinda like a bottle. It worked for Corina.

yes my daughter still does it so we started giving her the spill proof straw cups they work pretty well but they have to be the soft straws or she will chew them but the good thing about the harder ones is you can just staighten them out but she doesn't chew the soft ones. hopefully this helps you as much as it helped us :) We found ours at Wal-mart and Target.

ok so, do you give in every time and give him the bottle? DON'T! lol Be persistent! lol He knows that if he does it enough times you will give in and give him his bottle. When he gets thirsty enough, he will think that cuppy is the best thing in the world! Thats what i had to do with my daughter. She finally gave in when she realized she wasn't getting a bottle. When she got used to the cuppies, I made a game out of throwing her bottles away. She did it! Good luck hun!
