hi my name is jennifer and i have a 17 almost 18 mo old son and a home daycare..i also have been teaching kids for over 14yrs.. I have dealt with bitting before but this time it is my own child and i have tried everything but time out( i think he won't understand) and bitting back( I WILL NEVER DO THAT) He is kinda random with the bitting though on occassion he will bite because he has no words like when a child took his toy. but the other day he kept trying to bite i stopped it all but once..ugh.. i try and spend extra alone time with him during daycare..but i don't know if it is working please i am at my wits end..please help me.

My great nephew used to bite a lot and i would just tell him FIRMLY NO biting, biting hurts!!! Remove him from situation. Time outs are not going to work for this age group. The older they get you can go comfort the victim after it happens to them and tell them "i am so sorry, Charlie bit you i know it had to hurt" and dont pay any attention to the biter. It works. i used to teach preschool and boy that gets the biter everytime when no attention is given to them!!!

I've never found a quick fix I'm afraid, I will not bite back either I think it's not a good thing to do. A very firm NO, and removing the child to a different part of the room everytime he does it - eventually they learn or grow out of it - stressful I know my youngest son starts bitting everytime he's getting new teeth comming through after a week or so of NO and removing him or putting him down he stops until more teeth come, hopefully he''ll stop tething soon or learn!

My friend had a son like this and she tried every thing and she did have to bit back after all else failed and it did work. But if you are adament you wont do this then all I can suggest is to over act the pain of a bite and cry when he bites you. He should be so shocked that he cries to. If this does not work then really I have no idea. I can tell you that in England if your child bites he is not aloud in day care until he stops to protect the other children.
